M6
Living among the trees, working in a monument.
The spatial layout of the Hembrug, a former ammo manufacturing site, is determined by the risk of explosions. In addition to the respectful distances between buildings, it is the earthen embankments and the trees growing on them that now define the character and quality of ammo depot 6 as a dwelling.
This distinctive character is a great asset for its new function, we chose to make a patio as our starting point. The patio creates an introverted place of calm and provides light to the bedrooms and work areas. The living room and kitchen are situated on top and open outwards, allowing life to unfold among the trees with a view of the water.
The patio defines the transition between private and public space. This transition was difficult to achieve because the facade borders public grounds directly. Now the inhabitants can mediate views and access into the house by opening or closing the doors to the patio and hallway. Seen from the public domain, closed façades maintain the character of M6.
