The First Butterfly
The First Butterfly addresses water scarcity in Abu Dhabi by restoring desert watersheds. Using the natural processes of photosynthesis, evaporation, and soil stabilization, the project aims to transform barren desert into fertile land capable of supporting crops, trees, and perennials, while gradually improving local microclimates.
The project’s core is the Oloid, a rolling Möbius-like structure clad in colored bifacial photovoltaic glass. Each Oloid produces 380 kWh daily, enough for two Emirati households, while shading seedlings, fertilizing soil with compost, and shedding sand as it moves. Over a three-year cycle, Oloids move systematically across the desert, establishing vegetation and stabilizing the terrain.
As greenery expands, transpiration encourages cloud formation and rainfall, gradually influencing local weather patterns. By combining energy production, soil regeneration, and vegetation growth, The First Butterfly demonstrates how a single engineered system can generate renewable electricity, restore ecosystems, and create sustainable landscapes.
